Frequently Asked HVAC Questions

Got questions about your heating and cooling system? Our team has answers. Below are the most common questions we hear from Treasure Valley homeowners.

General HVAC Questions

How often should I replace my HVAC air filter?

We recommend replacing standard 1-inch filters every 30-60 days, and higher-quality 4-inch filters every 3-6 months. Homes with pets, allergies, or heavy dust should change filters more frequently. A dirty filter restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, and can damage your system.

How long does an HVAC system last?

With proper maintenance, most air conditioners last 15-20 years and furnaces last 15-25 years. However, systems older than 10 years may be significantly less efficient than modern equipment. If your system needs frequent repairs or your energy bills are climbing, it may be time to consider a replacement.

What temperature should I set my thermostat to?

The Department of Energy recommends 78°F in summer and 68°F in winter for the best balance of comfort and efficiency. In Idaho’s climate, a programmable or smart thermostat can save you 10-15% on heating and cooling costs by adjusting temperatures when you’re away or sleeping.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer 0% APR financing for qualified customers on new system installations. We also offer flexible monthly payment plans. No one should have to suffer through an Idaho winter or summer because of budget concerns.

Do you charge overtime rates for emergency calls?

No. Idaho Relief charges the same fair rates 24/7, including weekends and holidays. When your system breaks down at 2 AM in January, the last thing you need is a surprise bill.

Are your technicians certified?

Every Idaho Relief technician is NATE certified, EPA Section 608 certified, and undergoes continuous training. We’re also a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer, which means our installation technicians are factory-trained on the latest equipment.

How much does AC repair cost in Boise?

Most AC repairs in the Boise area range from $150 to $650 depending on the issue. Common repairs like capacitor replacement or refrigerant recharge are on the lower end, while compressor or evaporator coil repairs are higher. We always provide an upfront quote before starting work.

Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?

As a general rule: if the repair costs more than 50% of a new system and your current system is over 10 years old, replacement is usually the smarter investment. Our technicians will always give you an honest recommendation and never push unnecessary replacements.
